What are "gas fees" and why do I have to pay them?

Think of gas fees as the computational energy required to process and validate your transaction on the blockchain. It's not a fee that goes to SALVAnft; it's a reward for the decentralized network of computers (validators) that secure the Polygon blockchain and make everything work. The cost of gas fluctuates based on how busy the network is, much like Uber surge pricing. We don't control these fees, but we chose Polygon specifically because its fees are a fraction of a cent, making it incredibly affordable.
